The really short and sweet explanation is that you can query for punctuation that has text wrapped on either side of it, for example:

You can also query for terms and phrases that begin with # and @, for example:

At the moment it's not possible to query for symbols on their own (e.g searching for question marks to find questions in your data) but we're always exploring new ways to expand our search capabilities with queries.
