Your timeline chart is a great way to discover trends and monitor key business metrics over time. By default, we'll show you the frequency of your themes over time, but you can use the drop-down menus along the top to select different data points, metrics, and time periods as well!
Timeline Truncation
Timelines can be difficult to interpret when there are many themes or segments due to how overloaded the chart area becomes. Because of this, we default to showing only the Top 10 series. We offer multiple metrics to rank the series; the default selection being "Highest relative change". This metric measures how much each series changes relative to it's average and can highlight themes or segments with high volatility or large spikes/dips.
Clicking the blue pills will allow you to change the number of series to display, and the metric used to rank series.
How each metric behaves:
Lowest average - Series with with the lowest score over time
Lowest median - Similar to lowest average but with median instead of average
Highest average - Series with the highest score over time
Highest median - Similar to highest average, but with median instead of average
Highest absolute change - Series with the highest cumulative change over time; useful to highlight series with significant volatility that are likely to exert the biggest impact on the data.
Highest relative change - Series with the highest variance relative to their average; useful to highlight series with the most inherent volatility.
Below the legend you can click "Show X more" to enter the zoomed view of the timeline with all series visible.
Measuring Change
When you notice a significant change in a trend line, you can hover over a point to show a detailed tooltip. Of particular note, you'll see both percentage change since the previous data point and percentage change since the first data point.
Changing the Data Displayed
The timeline shows monthly theme frequency by default, but this can be changed using the dropdown menus.
First, let's change use the RESOLUTION menu to change from Monthly to Quarterly, since our data is a little sparse.
Then let's use the DATA menu to change from Themes to the Age field. Instead of seeing themes on the chart we'll now see segments of the selected field. Finally we can use the DISPLAY menu to change the metric displayed. We'll change from Frequency (%) to NPS.
As a result, we see that the NPS for the 18 to 24 age group dips significantly in Q2 2024.
Exporting Data
You can export the current visual state of the timeline chart as PNG or SVG. The PPT export will provide you with a native PowerPoint chart that you can customize. You can also export the underlying data via CSV. All of these options are available from the Export menu in the top right corner.
