Overview
The Report Assistant builds and changes Smart Reports from a description. Tell it what you want to see, for example "add monthly NPS by region", and it drafts the sections, dates and settings for you. You review the draft before anything changes.
You can also start a report from an Ask Kapiche conversation: when you ask Ask Kapiche to turn an answer into a report, it offers to build one for you.
Availability: the Report Assistant is rolling out. If you don't see Report Assistant in Edit mode, ask your Customer Success Manager to switch it on for your site.
Who can use it
Admins and Creators who can edit the report. It isn't available to Explorer or Viewer accounts.
Ask Kapiche must be on for your site. If a site administrator turns Ask Kapiche off, the Report Assistant is turned off too.
Building or changing a report
Open the Report Assistant
Open the report and click Edit mode.
Click Report Assistant. The assistant opens at the top of the report.
A new report created with Start with AI opens with the Report Assistant already open.
Ask for what you want
Type your request in What would you like to see in this report?, for example:
"Add metric tiles for NPS and CSAT"
"Show NPS over time by region, monthly"
"Add the top 5 pain points by NPS"
"Change the report to last quarter, compared to prior year"
You can keep chatting to refine the draft. When you change a report, the assistant leaves the parts you didn't mention as they were.
Review the draft
The assistant shows its draft as a card in the chat. The card lists the report's period, date field, metrics, themes, Viewer filters and sections. When you're changing an existing report, it also lists the Changes to the saved report, and under Adjusted to fit it says anything it changed to fit your data (see How it fits the report to your data).
Click Update Report to apply the draft, or Discard to throw it away.
If you have unsaved edits of your own, save or discard them first: applying the draft would replace them.
After you apply
The card says Applied to the report below. Click See Changes to scroll to the sections that changed; each one is highlighted until you scroll past it.
While a change is being applied, the date controls pause for a moment so nothing you click is overwritten.
How it fits the report to your data
The assistant builds the report for the data you have, so its sections show data rather than No data:
Dates: if your data ends before the report's dates start, applying the change moves the report to the same range at the newest date in your data. The header shows As of … (latest data) with Back to Today. The saved range doesn't change, so the report still moves forward as new data arrives.
Fields you didn't name: if a section needs a field you didn't mention, such as the metric for Metric Tiles or the field to break a timeline down by, the assistant picks the one with the most responses in the report's dates and tells you which.
Fields with no data: the assistant won't add a field that has no responses in the report's dates, or a breakdown with fewer than two values there. It tells you which fields do have data, and uses one of those instead.
These changes are listed under Adjusted to fit on the draft card, and the assistant explains them in its reply.
Creating a report from Ask Kapiche
In an Ask Kapiche chat about one analysis, ask for a report, for example "make this a monthly report". Ask Kapiche shows a Create this Smart Report? card with the request it will build from.
Click Create Report. The card shows progress while the report is built, then the new report is saved and opens with the Report Assistant ready for you to refine it.
Click Not Now to skip it, or Cancel to stop a report while it's being built.
Ask Kapiche doesn't offer a report when you ask how to create one, or in a chat that uses more than one analysis. See How to use Ask Kapiche.
FAQs
Will it change my report without asking?
Not in a report: you see the draft first, and nothing changes until you click Update Report. From Ask Kapiche, clicking Create Report builds and saves a new report straight away; delete it if you don't want it.
Why did my report's dates move?
Your data ends before the report's dates start, so the report moved to the same range at your newest data. Click Back to Today to return to today's dates.
Why didn't it add the field I asked for?
That field has no responses in the report's dates, so the section would show No data. The assistant says so and suggests fields that do have data. Try a longer date range, or one of the fields it suggests.
Can it share or schedule the report?
No. Ask it how and it will tell you the steps. See Sharing Smart Reports & Setting up an Automated Email Schedule.
